# Custom Lists Filters

Simkl’s **Custom Lists** feature lets you explore thousands of community-created lists of movies, TV shows, and anime. Whether you’re hunting for the perfect horror-movie binge or the latest blockbuster collection, the **Advanced Filters** panel helps you narrow down your search quickly.

In this article, we’ll explain, in simple terms, how to use these filters—and other related features—to find exactly what you want.

## Why Use Filters and Extra Features?

Imagine you have a huge bookshelf, but you only want to see science-fiction books your friends recommended, sorted by popularity, and you’d like the option to shuffle random picks or pin your favorite lists for easy access. Filters and additional controls on Simkl’s Custom Lists page serve these purposes:

* **Sorting & Time Ranges** let you see only recently updated lists or the most trending ones.
* **List Type** helps you separate *<mark style="color:purple;">auto-generated lists</mark>* from *<mark style="color:purple;">regular user-created</mark>* ones.
* **Random Shuffle (Roll the Dice)** provides a fun way to discover new lists.
* **Pinning & Managing Your Own Lists** on the *<mark style="color:yellow;">My Lists page</mark>* means your personal favorites and custom creations are always at your fingertips.

Taken together, these features make it easier to discover, organize, and access both community and personal content without endless scrolling.

## Lists Sorting Features

Above the list results—on the right side—you’ll find two dropdowns plus an ascending/descending toggle:

1. **Time Dropdown** (All | Day | Week | Month | Year)
   * Restricts results to lists created or updated within that timeframe.
   * If you select **Week**, you’ll see only lists updated or created in the last seven days.
2. **Sort By Dropdown** (Trending | Franchise popularity | Franchise revenue | Recently created | Recently items updated | Recently list info updated | Recently anything updated | Likes | Followers | Comments | Items added | Items suggested | Alphabet (A–Z))
   * Orders the filtered results according to your choice.
   * For example, if you select **Followers**, the lists with the highest follower counts appear at the top.
3. **Ascending/Descending Toggle** (arrow icon)
   * By default, sorting is in descending order (highest to lowest).
   * Clicking the small up/down arrow switches to ascending (lowest to highest) for the chosen Sort By criterion.

> Pro Tip: First set your Filters. Then choose a Time range and Sort By option to fine-tune the list order. Use the ascending/descending toggle if you want, for example, the least-followed or oldest trending lists.

## Lists Filter Features

### Opening the Filters Panel and Main Controls

When you visit <https://simkl.com/lists> and click on the **Discover** sub-tab under **Lists**, you’ll see the main list view. On the left side, you’ll find the gray **Filters** panel, and on the right (above the list results) you’ll see additional dropdowns and buttons:

1. **Locate “Filters”**
   * On desktop screens, the panel appears vertically on the left.
   * On narrower screens (mobile/tablet), tap the “Filters” icon to expand or collapse it.

<figure><img src="/files/7uHqNYulpfrg7ZCAkNzq" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

2. **Collapse / Expand / Maximize**

* Click **“Hide filters”** to collapse the entire panel.
* Click **“<<”** to minimize sub-sections (Custom Lists, List Tags, My List Tags).
* Click **“Maximize”** to widen the panel when you need more filter options visible at once.

> Tip: Collapsing filters gives you more room to scroll through results. Expanding them makes it easier to fine-tune your search.

<figure><img src="/files/PzBoJ2LHfTJzSXJTYSYn" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

3. **List Type Dropdown** (new!)
   * Just under the “REMOVE ALL FILTERS” bar and above the list of items, you’ll see a dropdown labeled **List type**.
   * Click it to choose from:\
     • Auto lists (lists automatically generated by Simkl’s Auto Lists)\
     • Regular lists (normal created lists)\
     • Auto Import (lists created by importing from external services)\
     • All lists (no restriction)

> When you select “Auto lists,” the results immediately show only algorithm-driven collections (for example, “Latest Releases (Movies)” or “Top 50 Anime”) while “Regular lists” displays only content manually curated by users.

### Searching by Title

At the top of the Filters panel is a **Search** bar:

* **By Title…**\
  Type any word or phrase—such as “Marvel,” “Studio Ghibli,” or “Top 100 Horror”—and Simkl instantly filters to show only lists whose titles match your query.
* **Search Icon (🎲)**\
  A small dice icon next to the search box triggers the **Random Shuffle** feature (more on that in section 7). Otherwise, clicking the magnifying glass or pressing Enter runs a standard search.

> Example: If you type “Mindfucks” and press Enter, you’ll see only the “Best Mindfucks (Movies)” list and any others with “Mindfucks” in their title.

### Choosing a Category: Movies | TV | Anime

Below the Search bar is **Custom Lists** with four categories:

1. **All Lists** – Shows all lists (Movies, TV shows, Anime) together.
2. **TV Shows** – Filters results to lists focusing on TV series (e.g., “Best Sci-Fi TV Shows,” “Top 10 Network Originals”).
3. **Anime** – Displays only anime-related lists (e.g., “Top 50 Shonen Anime,” “Studio Ghibli Anime List”).
4. **Movies** – Displays only movie-related lists (e.g., “1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die,” “Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) (Movies)”).

> Quick Start: If you know you want a TV-series list, click **TV Shows**. Otherwise, leave **All Lists** selected for the broadest results.

### Filter by List Ownership & Interaction

Under the category buttons, you’ll see **Filter by:** with multiple checkboxes:

* **My Lists** – Shows only lists you have personally created.
* **I Liked** – Displays lists you have “hearted” (liked).
* **Member’s lists** – Includes lists made by anyone other than yourself (all community members).
* **My friend’s lists** – Shows lists created by Simkl users you follow.
* **I’m following** – Shows lists you’ve chosen to follow (subscribe to).
* **Official lists** – Only show Simkl’s curated lists (e.g., “Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) (Movies),” “Latest Releases (TV Shows)”).
* **Ranked lists** – Filters to show only lists that are ranked (e.g., “Top 10 Sci-Fi Movies,” “Top 50 Anime”).

> Usage Tip: If you want to revisit a list you already liked, check **I Liked**. If you only want lists you personally created, check **My Lists**. If you want to see a friend’s custom list, check **My friend’s lists**.

<figure><img src="/files/pgPwBPc92n7A08HxYWzQ" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

### Additional Options: Franchises & Network Originals

Below the toggles, you’ll see:

* **Franchises** – Check this to see lists that focus on a single franchise (e.g., “Star Wars Movies,” “James Bond Franchise,” “Marvel Cinematic Universe”).
* **Network Originals** – Check this to see lists curated around streaming networks (e.g., “Netflix Originals,” “Hulu Originals,” “Disney+ Originals”).

> Why These Matter: If you’re specifically in the mood for everything related to one film franchise or network’s original content, these checkboxes isolate those lists instantly.

<figure><img src="/files/bf2HsLgTZIyilbYHZYK4" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

### Filtering by Content Activity: Comments, Likes, Collaborators, Suggestions

Next you’ll find four more checkboxes:

* **Has comments** – Lists that have at least one comment (popular or discussed lists usually have comments).
* **Has likes** – Lists that have earned at least one “like”—an indicator of community approval.
* **Has collaborators** – Filters to lists that multiple users cooperatively curate (e.g., “TV Shows List with Collaborators”). [Collaborative Features](/how-to-use-simkl/core-features/watchlists-and-custom-lists/custom-lists/creating-and-managing-custom-lists/collaborative-features.md)
* **Has suggestions** – Filters to lists that allow suggestions from other members—perfect for collaborative, evolving lists.&#x20;

> Use Case: If you want to see only actively discussed or community-driven lists, check **Has comments**, **Has collaborators**, or **Has suggestions**.

### Using List Tags & My List Tags

At the bottom of the Filters panel are two collapsible sections:

1. **List Tags**
   * Each list can have multiple tags (keywords) like “horror,” “2023,” “adventure,” “network original,” “martial arts,” etc.
   * Click the dropdown arrow to reveal “Discover top list tags,” or begin typing in the “Search for list tags by tags” box to narrow the tag list.
   * Click any tag to instantly filter results to lists that include that tag.
2. **My List Tags** (only visible if you have created lists)
   * Displays the tags you assigned to your own lists.
   * Helps you quickly jump to specific lists you manage, based on your personal tag categories.

> Example: If you type “adventure” in List Tags and select it, you’ll now see only lists tagged “adventure.”

### Removing or Resetting Filters

Whenever any filter is active, you’ll see a **REMOVE ALL FILTERS ✕** button at the top of the main list view (to the right of the Filters panel).

You might also see individual filters listed with small “✕” buttons next to them, for example:

*<mark style="color:blue;">REMOVE ALL FILTERS – Favorites ✕ – Recommendations ✕ 1,897 custom lists found</mark>*

* **To clear a single filter**: Click the small <mark style="color:blue;">✕</mark> next to that filter’s name (for example, click the ✕ next to “Favorites”).
* **To clear all filters at once**: Click <mark style="color:blue;">**REMOVE ALL FILTERS ✕**</mark><mark style="color:blue;">.</mark>

Once filters are cleared, the list count (e.g., “1,897 custom lists found”) updates in real time.

## My Lists Page: Pinning, Managing, and Privacy Settings

All of the above controls apply on the **Discover** sub-tab of **Lists**. But when you click your own Profile (top-left “PROFILE” section) and select **My Lists**, you can manage the lists you created or follow. Several additional features appear:

<figure><img src="/files/llOulRecXOO6TpsmTi78" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

<figure><img src="/files/2G4VAwjJvbqIgf5g2jXH" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

1. **Create a New List…**
   * A large button at the top allows you to start a brand-new custom list.
2. **Discover Lists Dropdown**
   * Switch between:\
     • My lists (created + following) – Shows all lists you either created or chose to follow.\
     • My lists (created only) – Shows only the lists you authored yourself.\
     • Following – Shows only the lists you follow/subscribe to.
3. **Pinning / Unpinning to Top**
   * Each list you see has a little pushpin icon in the top-right corner of its thumbnail card.
   * Clicking that pin **pins** the list to the top of your My Lists feed, ensuring you see it first any time you return.
   * If a list is already pinned, click the pin again to **unpin** it.
4. **Three-Dot Menu (⋮) Options**
   * On each list entry (hover over it to reveal the menu), click the three vertical dots to open a set of options:\
     • Edit list – Enter the list editor to add/remove items or change descriptions.\
     • Open in new tab – Opens the list in a fresh browser tab.\
     • Unpin from top – (If a list is pinned) Removes it from the pinned section.\
     • Add to Dashboard – Adds a quick link on your Profile Dashboard for faster access.\
     • Delete list – Permanently delete the list (requires confirmation).

> Tip: Pin your most-used or favorite lists so they’re always at the top. Use “Add to Dashboard” for quick shortcuts when you first sign in.

## Tips & Best Practices for All Features

* **Experiment with List Type Early**\
  When browsing, try switching between Auto lists and Regular lists to see which style of content you prefer. Auto lists often update automatically, whereas Regular lists reflect manual curation by passionate users.
* **Use Time + Sort By Together**\
  If you want to find the most-talked-about lists this month, set **Time → Month** and **Sort By → Likes**. This instantly highlights active, community-engaged lists.
* **Roll the Dice to Break Decision Fatigue**\
  When you can’t decide on a new list to explore, click the dice icon. It’s a fun feature that shows random selections—sometimes revealing hidden gems you wouldn’t otherwise find.
* **Organize Your Own Lists with Privacy**\
  Create private or unlisted drafts of your personal lists before making them public. Once you’re happy with the content, switch to Public so others can discover them.
* **Pin Only Your Must-Have Lists**\
  Pin the lists you return to most often—perhaps your “Top 100 Anime,” “All Marvel Movies,” or your favorite “Netflix Originals” list—so you don’t have to search each time.
